Thomas Paine “The American Crisis,” The Pennsylvania Packet, No. 1, 27 December 1776. Paine was famous for his spirited calls to the American colonists to rebel against the British crown; his two pamphlets Common Sense and The Rights of Man laid out the philosophical and political arguments for independence.
